Eight Atlanta
Families reward the hard work and accomplishments of APS teachers
and principals through the
Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in
Education.
Atlanta Families Awards understands how critical teacher and
principal quality is in ensuring that every child receives an
excellent education. To promote this belief, Awards for Excellence
in Education recognize outstanding teachers and principals in APS.
Educators receive this award by demonstrating excellence in three
areas:
Distinguished quantitative evidence of improved student
achievement.
Has an impressive track record showing substantial gains in his/her
students’ achievement as evidenced by the students’ significant
improvement in CRCT test scores.
Qualitative evidence of enhancing students’ self-esteem.
Demonstrates an effective and meaningful impact on students’
self-esteem. Shows clear, consistent and compelling examples of
classroom strategies and behavior that support positive self-image
as evidenced by essay question responses, letters of
recommendation, observation notes from administrators, and end of
the year Summative Evaluation.
History of collaboration within the classroom, school and greater
community.
Partners with other teachers and department heads as well as
parents and the greater school community. Works well with all
stakeholders to create a collaborative force for change throughout
their classroom and school as evidenced by essay question responses
and letters of recommendation. Sees the value in working with
others to educate the whole child as evidenced by the degree to
which positive change has occurred in the classroom and
beyond.
The AEF serves as fiscal agent and program financial manager for
the Excellence in Education Awards. Each teacher and
principal winner is awarded $7,500 that includes funding for a
school project of the winner’s choice, funding for a professional
development opportunity to increase the winner’s effectiveness in
the school or classroom, and a personal stipend. Since 2006,
the Atlanta Families’ Awards for Excellence in Education has
recognized 69 educators in Atlanta Public Schools and the program
looks forward to recognizing other educators to thank them for the
work they do each day in educating Atlanta’s children.
